Comparing New Luxury SUVs: Discovery vs. Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7

You'll never want to stop discovering Nashville spots in a new Discovery SUV. Among three-row luxury SUVs, the Discovery is a dream to travel with. There's room for the whole family, not to mention plenty of luxurious features and capability for trails well outside Nashville. But how does the new Discovery compare to the luxury SUV competition? Here at Land Rover Nashville, we help families narrow their list of new SUVs by comparing the Discovery to the Volvo XC90 and the Audi Q7.

Discovery vs. Audi Q7

New Discovery SUVs have more cargo space, additional third-row legroom, exclusive cabin features, a superior tech setup, and higher performance outputs and capability ratings. The Audi Q7 can't quite keep up.

Cargo Space

Is the third row of your SUV unoccupied as you shop at the Nashville Farmers Market or the Opry Mills mall? The new Discovery offers more cargo space with the back row of seats folded. The Audi Q7's 36 cubic feet of cargo space is considerably less than the Discovery offering 45 cubic feet. New Discovery SUVs have a max cargo volume of 74 cubic feet, topping the Audi Q7 at 70 cubic feet.

Legroom & Interior Features

Are you taking the kids to their Brentwood school in the Discovery? They'll appreciate the 33.5 inches of legroom in the back row. The third row of the Audi Q7 is rather crammed and only offers 29.2 inches of legroom. The new Discovery provides more balanced legroom across the three rows and features unique stadium-style seating.

The power panoramic sunroof in the Audi Q7 counters a fixed rear panoramic roof featuring a sliding front sunroof in the Discovery. Each SUV comes with climate control for three different zones. Audi's three-row SUV doesn't offer heated electric third row seats like the Discovery does to keep your crew comfortable on the way home from a night of live music in Nashville. What sets the Discovery apart is its Cabin Air Purification setup featuring an exclusive nanoeâ„¢ X ionization system. All dust, pollens, allergens, and bacteria are removed when you ride back to Brentwood in a new Discovery.

Performance

Audi Q7 SUVs can only tow 7,700 pounds, compared to 8,200 pounds for the Discovery. Haul a heavier trailer on vacation with your Discovery, which is equipped with all-wheel drive and Terrain Response. While the Q7 includes quattro® all-wheel drive, the largest Audi SUV has no terrain-specific capabilities. The new Discovery is equally comfortable on roads through your Brentwood neighborhood and Middle Tennessee trails far beyond Nashville.

Rated for 296 standard horsepower, the new Discovery is also the more powerful SUV. The Audi Q7 outputs 261 horsepower through a similar turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Audi Q7 SUVs powered by the turbocharged V6 engine are rated for 335 horsepower, but that figure is still below the Discovery, which generates 355 horsepower through its 3.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-6 engine.

Technology

The 10.1-inch touchscreen for the Audi MMI® touch response system in the Q7 is smaller than the new Discovery with its Pivi Pro 11.4-inch touchscreen. New Discovery SUVs include both wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ integration. The Q7's Audi smartphone interface only includes wireless Apple CarPlay®. Android users require a cord to connect. The Q7 offers Audi virtual cockpit plus to counter the Interactive Driver Display in the Discovery, which features an exclusive Adaptive Speed Limiter with Traffic Sign Recognition.

Discovery vs. Volvo XC90

Choose the new Discovery for more cargo space, extra legroom, a power boost, a larger touchscreen, more speakers, and a higher towing capacity. The Volvo XC90 falls short in these departments.

Cargo Space

Once again, the Discovery wins in cargo space. After you buy groceries at your Brentwood supermarket, the Discovery provides 45 cubic feet of cargo space when the third row is folded. There's only 36 cubic feet in the Volvo XC90, which has a lower total cargo capacity of 66 cubic feet. There's an extra eight cubic feet to utilize when Nashville families fold the seats of their Discovery.

Legroom & Interior Features

Discovery SUVs have an extra half-inch of legroom in the middle row and nearly two inches of additional legroom in the third row. The 32 inches of rear legroom in the Volvo XC90 is less than the Discovery at 33.5 inches.

A standard heated steering wheel for the Discovery is not part of the Volvo XC90's base model. Each SUV has a panoramic roof. Volvo's three-row SUV includes an air purifier, but the Discovery has a superior nanoeâ„¢ X ionization system. Leatherette upholstery is not on the same level of comfort as the Discovery's Ebony leather seats.

Performance

The Volvo XC90's turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is rated for 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, with both outputs considerably lower than the Discovery that outputs 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Max horsepower for the Volvo XC90 is 295 horsepower, while the Discovery can deliver up to 355 horsepower.

All-wheel drive is standard for the Volvo XC90, but it cannot counter the all-terrain capabilities provided by the Discovery through Terrain Response. Only capable of towing 5,000 pounds, the Volvo XC90 is less suited for vacations. With a new Discovery, Nashville families can pull their boat or small camper with ease, thanks to a superior towing rating of 8,200 pounds.

Technology

Smartphone connectivity in the Volvo XC90 is not wireless. It is in the Discovery, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay®/Android Auto™ integration through Pivi Pro and a larger touchscreen measuring 11.4 inches. The Volvo XC90 has a 9-inch center display. Both SUVs offer a Head-Up Display. There are only 10 speakers for the Volvo XC90's High Performance audio system. Match the tone of live music in Nashville with 12 speakers in the Discovery through the SUV's Meridian™ Sound System.
