There are three basic categories of fluids in a car, namely; hydraulic fluids, coolants, and lubricating fluids. Hydraulic fluids get used where there is a transfer of power from one point to another. Lubricants get used in preventing wear and tear of moving parts by minimizing frictions between elements. Coolants get used for cooling down the heat generating within the engine.
Lubricants include engine oil, gear oil, and clutch oil. They are designed to increase the lifespan of components.
Coolant fluids dissipate generated heat away from components towards a radiator where air flashes it away from the car. They include engine coolant (water) and AC coolant (air).
Modern vehicles are made with specific tolerances. Every fluid must meet the manufactures working parameters such as viscosity, boiling and flash points, among other particular elaborates threshold for them to work optimally. For this reason, they need to get changed regularly according to the user manual.
